How it is calculated

Value = weight in grams × fineness / 1000 × spot price per gram. For example, 10 g of 18 karat gold (750) contains 7.5 g of pure gold. Fineness shows how many parts in 1000 are pure metal: 750 means 75% gold. US jewelry is usually 10 karat (417), 14 karat (583) or 18 karat (750).

Why would a dealer pay me less?

The spot value is the upper limit. Investment bars are bought back close to it because they can be resold as they are. Jewelry and scrap are melted and refined, so the buyback price is lower. Compare dealers’ buyback prices before you sell.

Frequently asked questions

How is the value of my gold calculated?

The weight in grams is multiplied by the fineness and by the current price of pure gold per gram. The calculator does it automatically in dollars.

Will I get this amount if I sell?

Not exactly. The calculator shows the value of the metal. Dealers and pawnbrokers buy below it, especially jewellery. Real buyback prices are in the dealer tables.
