Tax on gold in the US

There is no federal sales tax on bullion. Most states exempt gold and silver from sales tax, sometimes above a minimum order; a few still tax it. Gains on bullion are taxed as collectibles by the IRS.

What “over spot” means

The spot price is the market price of one troy ounce (31.1 g) of pure gold. Dealers sell above it to cover minting, delivery and their margin. The smaller the bar or coin, the higher the premium per gram, so compare the percentage, not only the price.
