Silver carries 20% VAT; we only compare silver bars at VAT-inclusive prices, while silver coin prices are shown as each dealer lists them, so check at checkout whether VAT is added. “Over spot” is the premium over the value of the pure metal at the live spot price. Gold and silver news

Tax on gold in the UK

Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK. UK legal tender coins such as the Sovereign and the Britannia are also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents, which is why they are the most popular gold coins in the country.

What “over spot” means

The spot price is the market price of one troy ounce (31.1 g) of pure gold. Dealers sell above it to cover minting, delivery and their margin. The smaller the bar or coin, the higher the premium per gram, so compare the percentage, not only the price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does gold cost today in the UK?

The price changes during the day. The table on this page shows the selling prices of Tavex UK, Gold.co.uk, Physical Gold, The Royal Mint, Chards, Baird & Co, Gold Investments for every product, and buyback prices where dealers publish them, updated every 30 minutes.

What is the spread on gold?

The spread is the gap between the price at which a dealer sells and the price at which it buys back, in per cent. The smaller the spread, the less you lose if you sell your gold back.

Is there VAT or Capital Gains Tax on gold?

Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK. UK legal tender coins such as the Sovereign and the Britannia are also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents.

Is a gold bar or a coin better value?

Bars usually carry a lower premium over the metal value, especially in larger sizes. Coins cost more over spot but are easier to sell in small amounts. Compare the “over spot” column in the tables.
