Methodology

This page explains where the prices on HawkValue come from, how often they update and how we compare them. If anything here does not match what you see on the site, tell us – it means we got it wrong.

Which dealers we track

We read the publicly listed prices of gold and silver bars and coins from Tavex UK, Gold.co.uk, Physical Gold, The Royal Mint, Chards, Baird & Co, Gold Investments. We do not receive prices from dealers directly and we only use information that any visitor of their website can see.

How often prices update

We check every dealer every 30 minutes. If a website does not respond, we keep its last prices for up to 6 hours; older prices are dropped so we never show an offer that is long gone. A price on HawkValue can therefore lag the dealer’s website by up to about 30 minutes – always confirm before you pay.

How products are compared

  • Products are identical when they match in metal, form (bar or coin), weight and, for coins, coin type. All 1 oz gold bars form one group whatever the refinery; a 1 oz Maple Leaf and a 1 oz Krugerrand are different groups.
  • Bundles, tubes and boxes of many coins are not compared with single items. Graded, proof and collectible pieces are excluded.
  • If a dealer has several offers in one group, we show its cheapest one that is in stock.
  • A product is shown only when at least two dealers sell it. Sold-out offers stay in the table but always below those in stock.
  • Offers are sorted by the dealer’s selling price only. No dealer can pay for a better position.

What the columns mean

  • Buy – the price at which the dealer sells the product to you, as listed on its website.
  • Sell back – the price at which the dealer says it will buy the same product from you, where it is published.
  • Over spot – how far the price is above the value of the pure metal at the live spot price.
  • vs cheapest – how much more the offer costs than the cheapest offer in stock for the same product.

Spot price

The spot price is based on the front-month COMEX gold and silver futures, converted with the European Central Bank reference rate where needed. It can differ slightly from the London (LBMA) spot price; for comparing premiums the difference is not material.
